What is a Hair Transplant?

The hair transplant procedure is an operation that treats hair loss by transferring hair follicles from one area in the body (the donor area) to areas of the body that suffer from hair loss or thinning (the areas of the body that are receiving). Hair transplants are typically utilized to treat male pattern hair loss, female pattern hair loss, and other forms of loss of hair like those resulted from burns, trauma or medical issues.

Hair transplant procedures are becoming more and more well-known due to their efficacy and natural-looking results. Through advanced techniques, hair transplants can offer a permanent solution for hair loss.

Types of Hair Transplant Techniques

  1. FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction): FUE is a non-invasive hair transplant procedure that involves the extraction of individual hair follicles from the area of donation (usually the sides or back of the scalp) and then transferring them into the area of the recipient. Its benefits include:

  • There are no large cuts or stitches needed.

  • Scarring is minimal.
  • A faster recovery time.
  • Natural-looking results.
  1. FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation): FUT is a traditional procedure in which a strip skin containing hair follicles is taken away from the donor site and follicular units are individually removed and transferred to the area of the recipient. Benefits are
  • It is suitable for large areas of hair loss.
  • You can harvest a greater number of follicles during a single session.
  1. DHI (Direct Hair Implantation): DHI is a variant of FUE in which the hair follicles are implanted directly into the area of the recipient using an instrument that is specifically designed, eliminating the requirement for cutting. Advantages include:
  • Exact implant of hair follicles.
  • There is no need to cut the scalp.
  • A faster recovery time.

Who is a Good Candidate for a Hair Transplant?

Hair transplants can be beneficial for those who suffer from loss of hair or thinning because of:

  • Male or Female Pattern Baldness: This is the most common cause of hair loss, which can often be addressed with a hair transplant.

  • Thinning Hair: The hair transplant procedure can be beneficial to those with hair loss who still have healthy hair follicles within the donor region.
  • Alopecia Areata or Traction Alopecia: Loss of hair caused by autoimmune disorders as well as tension or strain on scalp (from hairstyles for instance) can also be addressed.
  • Scarring or Burn Damage: People who have suffered hair loss due to scars or burns may benefit from hair transplants.

It is important to have a healthy donor area (typically the back or sides of the scalp) where the hair follicles are thick and strong. Age, overall health and the extent of hair loss will also influence whether you're a suitable candidate for the procedure.

Benefits of Hair Transplants

  • Permanent Solution to Hair Loss: Once the transplanted hair follicles are established, they grow like natural hair and are permanent.

  • Natural-Looking Results: Modern hair transplant techniques provide natural-looking results with minimal scarring.

  • Boost in Confidence: Restoring a full head of hair can significantly boost self-esteem and improve the overall appearance.
  • Low Maintenance: Transplanted hair requires minimal care and patients can usually return to their normal routine within a few days to weeks.

Hair Transplant Procedure

  • Consultation: In the initial consultation surgeons will determine the amount of hair loss, look at the donor area and talk about your goals. They will also discuss the procedure, likely results, and any risk.

  • Preparation: On the day of the procedure, the donor area is shaved and local anesthesia is administered to numb the scalp. A surgeon also marks the regions in which the hair follicles are to be implanted

  • Extraction: In FUE, individual hair follicles are removed from the donor area. In FUT, a strip of skin is removed and divided into follicular units.
  • Implantation: The extracted follicles are carefully transplanted into the recipient area, where they will begin to grow new hair.
  • Recovery: After the procedure, there may be mild swelling, redness or discomfort which generally subsides within a few days. Scabbing may also occur in the recipient area. Full recovery takes several weeks and the transplanted hair will begin to shed before new hair starts to grow after 3-6 months.
Cost of Hair Transplant

The hair transplant cost varies based on factors like the type of procedure, the number of grafts required and the surgeon’s expertise. Additional costs may include consultations, post operative care and medications.
